This year's "killer app" for carriers is mobile email. Carriers already offer proprietary mobile email
services, but these serve a limited market due to high device cost and monthly fees.

Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) 1.2 protocols. We leverage the open source Funambol community
software allowing connections to popular email servers, offering full support for sending, receiving,
and forwarding email and attachments on commodity handsets.
Our custom tools also provide for automatic backup and synchronization of handset contact and
calendar (PIM) information. Customers know that their mobile devices are vulnerable, and their
contacts can be more valuable than the device. Offering full phone backup with PIM
synchronization, with a full web interface and connectors for popular email servers, is a sure way
to improve customer loyalty.
Further, being able to provision and manage phones "over the air" not only improves customer
satisfaction, it lowers carrier costs. All of this requires a solid server foundation for deploying new
software provided by developers and software partners. New services need to run with carrier
grade saleability and clustered reliability.
Finally, there's device testing. Nearly 750 million new phones will be sold this year, and the vast
majority come with SyncML and Java capabilities. How do you test those phones for compatibility?
You need a test-bed to ensure tight standards compliance. The OMA Data Synchronization /
Device Management standards (OMA DS/DM, popularly known as SyncML) are a must for the
highest levels of interoperability.
